Noordwijk aims to strengthen its ties with the KNVB. The municipality is set to apply as a candidate to host a new headquarters and complex for the football association. Wethouder Sport Dennis Salman expressed, "Given Noordwijk's long history with the KNVB and the Dutch national team, we would be a natural choice for the KNVB Campus."
Noordwijk hosted the Dutch national team during training camps for an extended period. However, after the inauguration of a new KNVB Campus, the national team opted to prepare for international matches near the football association's headquarters in Zeist starting from 2017.
The current campus has become too small for the ambitions of the largest sports federation in the Netherlands. With limited possibilities for expansion in Zeist, the KNVB called for interested municipalities to submit proposals, as reported in Binnenlands Bestuur's magazine.
Noordwijk faces competition from Alkmaar, Oisterwijk, Rotterdam, and Barendrecht, all vying to host the KNVB headquarters. Additionally, Almere, Lelystad, and Breda have also shown interest. The KNVB will review all proposals next month and proceed with discussions with five selected parties.
